Celebrating Nurses Week at St. Joseph Medical Center

St. Joseph Medical Center celebrated all nursing staff during Nurses Week with a week long agenda of fun– filled events. The hospital was buzzing with the excitement that Nurses Week was finally here. A picture filled display case, “Happy Nurses Week” signage decorated the drive leading to the employee parking garage, and a nursing photo loop in the employee entryway got the employees revved up for the week’s events. Nurses got into the spirit with dressing in all white in the classic nursing attire, and working together to gather toiletries to donate to the St. Clare Medical Outreach Patients. A thank you card was given to all nurses for all that they do from Pam Jamieson, Chief Nursing Officer, the nursing leadership team and the nurse managers.

The week started with a “Florence Nightingale Birthday Party,” which consisted of lunch, fun games, raffle prizes and a chance for each department to display a beautiful presentation, “The Gallery of Pride” that represented their staff. Nursing leadership also served a hot meal from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. for all night shift nurses. On Wednesday, nurses were treated to lunch and given the opportunity to enjoy a lecture, “Humor in Nursing” by Ann Belcher, RN, PhD, AOCN,CNE, FAAN, ANEF. Thursday followed with “Breakfast for Nurses” sponsored by the medical staff and a celebratory mass in the chapel. Friday included an “Awards in Nursing Excellence Ceremony,” a time to truly recognize unsung nursing heroes who were selected by their peers, as well as to recognize all St. Joseph’s nurses for everything they do. A Saturday luncheon concluded the week’s celebration.

In addition, it was announced that more than $100,000 raised by the recent Gala, held by the St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation on April 18, 2009, will go to The Orthopaedic Fund for Nursing Excellence to be used towards nursing education and certification at St. Joseph Medical Center, thus contributing to St. Joseph’s goal to achieve Nursing Magnet status.
