Departmental Scope of Services
7 East is a 42-bed inpatient medical-surgical unit comprised of 19 semi-private rooms and four private rooms that specializes in the GI post-surgical patient.
7 West is a 31-bed inpatient medical-surgical unit comprised of 14 semi-private rooms and three private rooms that specializes in the care of the cancer and GI patient. Nurses, physicians, and social services collaborate with support services to provide an interdisciplinary approach to meet the care needs of the patient populations across the continuum.
Types of Patients Served
The staff members provide care to adult (age 18 and greater) surgical, wound care and gastroenterology patients. Care of other patients, such as those admitted for extended stay following surgical procedures and overflow medical patients, is provided as needed to these same-age populations.
Overview of Department Services
The registered nurse completes the initial assessment. An interdisciplinary plan of care is developed with input and follow-up from the interdisciplinary care team as well as the inclusion of the patient and/or significant other in the plan of care when appropriate. Patient/significant other education is provided on an ongoing basis by members of the the interdisciplinary team to include medication instruction, disease process, pain control treatment, and discharge planning. Patients are routinely reassessed for their response to care and outcomes of care are evaluated on an ongoing basis by the interdisciplinary care team.
Staffing Model
Assignments are made each shift reflecting the degree of supervision required by each staff member, the patient’s needs, the technology used and the geography of the unit. The nurse includes the family in the care of the patient and supports and educates the family as well as the patient.
