Units & Operating Suites
- Seven medical/surgical units, a pediatric inpatient unit, an ambulatory surgery unit, special post-anesthesia care units and state-of-the-art 28-bed critical care unit
- Newly expanded and renovated Level III+ neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), for providing care for infants with lung disease, infections and complications stemming from premature birth
- 22 operating suites equipped to accommodate a full range of surgical services, including four operating rooms dedicated for open-heart surgery

- The Heart Institute Recognized seven times as one of the nation’s top heart hospitals by Solucient 100 Top Hospitals®: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study and more often than any Maryland hospital, the Heart Institute includes the largest open-heart surgery and all-digital cardiac catheterization programs in Maryland as well as a range of diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic facilities and services; six state-of-the-art all digital cardiac catheterization laboratories; cardiographics, electrophysiology lab; nuclear medicine; cardiac intensive care; hospital-wide monitoring capabilities; cardiovascular fitness programs. St. Joseph conducts the largest number of cardiac clinical trials of any hospital in Maryland and of the Eastern seaboard and mid-eastern states.
- The Cancer Institute St. Joseph Medical Center offers patients a comprehensive approach to cancer care. Recently awarded a research grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), The Cancer Institute is dedicated to providing the most advanced and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment to its patients. St. Joseph is an accredited multidisciplinary community hospital cancer institute by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (COC). The Cancer Institute also has seven centers of focus in regard to cancer. They include the Breast Center, the Gynecologic Oncology Center, the Hodes Comprehensive Liver and Pancreas Center, Urologic Oncology Center, the Thoracic Oncology Center, The Colorectal Oncology Center and the Radiation Oncology Center.
- Orthopaedic Institute Named one of the nation’s top orthopaedic facilities by U.S.News & Word Report and Healthgrades, the orthopaedic program at St. Joseph is one of the largest in the state. The Institute includes the Scoliosis and Spine Center, and offers programs in sports medicine, joint replacement, spine surgery, upper extremity and foot and ankle surgery, and is one of few facilities with FDA approval to perform highly complex disc replacement surgery.
- Family Childbirth Center Provides family-oriented care, which includes Labor, Delivery and Recovery (LDR) suites, a nursery and a Level III+Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). St. Joseph also offers high risk obstetrical services, lactation consultants, a Warm-Line for breastfeeding mothers, as well as a range of family education classes for expectant and new parents. Our Mother/Baby Suite features 20 postpartum rooms with home-like amenities.
- The Stroke Center is certified as a Primary Stroke Center with Distinction by The Joint Commission. All St. Joseph’s Emergency Department physicians, intensivists, and Critical Care house officers are certified in performing the stroke scale, which ranks severity of stroke in order to determine who is a candidate for TPA.
- Emergency Department is staffed by specially trained physicians and nurses 24-hours a day, seven days a week. The St. Joseph Emergency Department (ED), a Level II facility, provides emergency treatment for more than 40,000 patients per year.
- Psychiatric Services Psychiatric care is provided through a 20-bed, short-term inpatient unit and a partial hospitalization program. Staff psychiatrists and psychologists treat disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and adjustment problems to life. Psychiatric consultants provide emergency psychiatric evaluations in the Emergency Department
- Surgical Services More than 18,000 surgical procedures are performed annually at St. Joseph. Twenty-two state-of-the-art operating rooms and private preoperative and postoperative recovery rooms make St. Joseph one of the largest and most modern surgical facilities in the area. Staff is comprised of nearly 300 surgeons who are on the leading edge of surgical developments, including advanced minimally-invasive surgery.

Education & Outreach
Our Community Outreach, Family Education, and Community programs, which include immunizations, screenings, support groups and classes serve more than 18,000 individuals a year.
St. Clare Medical Outreach Program is a primary care office on wheels, begun in 1997 to provide health care for the uninsured, the needy and those unable to access the health system due to language and other barriers. It offers free medical care and medications to treat health problems ranging from colds and viruses to diabetes and high blood pressure. Specialized medical care, laboratory services, radiology services and nuclear medicine are all provided free of charge by St. Joseph Medical Center and medical staff.
St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation
A subsidiary of St. Joseph Medical Center and a member of Catholic Health Initiatives, the Foundation was founded in February 1989 by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia and St. Joseph Medical Center Board of Directors. Through the efforts of its Board members and staff, the Foundation seeks the philanthropic support of the community served by St. Joseph Medical Center. Fundraising is accomplished through planned gifts, major gifts, direct mail, special events, grants and major campaigns. To assure continued services to the Medical Center, the Foundation cultivates new and lasting relationships with prospective donors and provides stewardship to already generous donors.
